Potatoes, rice, corn, beans, quinoa, chicken and soups characterize Bolivian cuisine. Since the origin of the potato is in the high Andes, there are about 200 different varieties in Bolivia. A traditional soup is the "Sopa de ManÃ", a Bolivian peanut soup. Street food often includes tucumana, a variation of empanadas filled with chicken or vegetables.
Bolivian culture is characterized by many influences. Past advanced civilizations were the Tiwanaku and the Inca. This history is reflected in the colorful and patterned clothing made from llama, alpaca and vicuna skins. Colonization brought other aspects such as the Spanish language and Christianity.
The people of Bolivia are very proud of their origins and roots. Over 50 % of the population belong to indigenous tribes, including mainly Quechua and Aymara, whose languages are still spoken today.
The country is characterized by the mountainous landscapes of the Andes with an altitude of over 6,500 meters. It is home to the highest navigable lake on earth, as well as wet savannahs and rainforest areas. Due to this diversity of climatic zones, there is a rich variety of flora and fauna.
